The Book
War Sand is the epic of war told by a grain of sand. The book was made by Donald Weber. The Normandy beaches are full of history and memerobilia that remind us of the second world war. For this book, Donald Weber, writer Larry Frolick and physicist Kevin Robbie explore these beaches along the Normandy coast line where D-Day happened. These photo’s create an experience and are meant to take you with them through our history and memories. It tries to show you the traces and remains over time of the great battle that took place and the impact it still has.
The Process
When we started to work on this book Donald had told me that he was inspired by William Turner for this book. This kind of detail is important to know for me. It allows me to take that in consideration when reproducing the images and allows me to understand where Donald was coming from. Knowing Turners style in imaging I could make sure to keep that feel and look in the images and allow them to come back on paper.
With this particular book I was also involved with production management. This book contains so many images that had to be printed on different paper stocks that it became a big project. However, I truly enjoyed having the opportunity to work on it and to see it come out like this was very rewarding.
