The Book

The Land of that Perfect Day is Brandon's first Monograph. The book is a reflection of life at the Mississippi Delta but also presents the tales of strength against struggle, humility amidst pride, and promises for deliverance in the lives he has come to know. Along the Mississippi Delta are scattered small communities. Brandon roamed these area's for over eight years and learned about the history and the current experiences the residents of this area experience.
At the same time it is also a journey of finding ones identity, personal exploration of faith and perseverance. And while the images may focus on the African American communities that have setteled in that area, it touches on topics that all of us face every day and trying to navigate that.

The Process

Brandon came to me after he had seen my work on Imperial Courts by Dana Lixenberg. Together with designer Teun van der Heijden we worked on giving this special project a stunning end result. For this book I used a technique called quad toning. Meaning that the black and white images are reproduced in 4 curves allowing maximum tonal range and maximum control of contrast. Teun wanted to make a combination of the yellow-ish paper and a slightly blue-ish tone in the images. With this given, I picked the colours and created the curves resulting in this beautiful book. It was a pleasure to work on and use a technique I don't use that often!
