The Book
From Where I Stand by Otobong Nkanga is both the title of this book, as well as the title of her show at Tate St. Ives. In addition one of the works in this show is also called from where I stand. The book has been conceived as a document of the development of the exhibition and a view into Nkanga’s creative process. The book starts with a poem written by herself. In addition, it also includes an extensive selection of her photographs. To complete the book author Helon Habila has written a respons in the form of a short fictional story making this book complete and a different enough body of work from the exhibition.
The Process
For me, there was only a very limited time to work on this book. Deadlines were pressing and yet the material supplied for the book was quite diverse in quality. My challenge was laid out for me. In a relatively short time I should get these images to same standard and make it a cohesive story. I brought uniformity to all of these images by getting rid of casts of colour in images, opening up blocked sections and making sure that every image had enough body to attract the readers attention.
I was rewarded afterwards by an e-mail from both the curator and the artist in which they expressed their joy upon seeing the printed results.
