But then again, as she says it, the south isn't a rational place. The south is defined by poverty, religion and racism. Through her seven years of travel through the south eastern part of the US she submerged herself in the southern gothic, a local literary movement. She found that as opposed to the original direction of the gothic literature, evil was not found in the supernatural anymore, but in everyday life, in the mundane.
