The Book
The term ‘Deep Time’ refers to geological time and encompasses the age of the earth which scientists estimate to be about 4.5 billion years old. The photographs in this book were made in Lewes, Delaware (US), surrounding beaches and in laboratory using microscopes and emerged from an intense period of learning about the world of the horseshoe crab which unexpectedly became a sort of muse for Lynn Alleva Lilley.
Through her poetic way of photographing Alleva Lilley manages to capture the wondrous beauty of our planet and the mystic life of the horseshoe crab in many different ways, resulting in an immersive photo book which references encyclopaedias and the illustrative 19th century books on nature.
The Process
Deep Time is the second book I worked on with Lynn Alleva Lilley. This cooperation between us started in 2015 when we met in Paris and the violent terrorist attacks happened. We then worked together on Tender Mint, her first book. I also advised her on selecting a publisher to work with, which is how she came to connect with The Eriskay Connection.
Working on Tender Mint we al ready talked about this other project of hers about the Horseshoe Crab. So this book has been with me for quite some time.
I was exited to see her images come in. Knowing her work and how she wants her images to communicate I was able to bring in my ideas to improve the atmosphere in her work, knowing that these ideas would bring her satisfaction.
It feels gratifying to be so closely connected to an artist and add my expertise to the presentation of her work.
