The Book
When Nicholas lived in Los Angeles he used to walk around a lot. These daily photographic excursions always started from the building he was living in: #738. Exploring the tension between wanting to belong and actually belonging, focusing on the texture of a city perched on top of the Sint Andreas Fault. The way the book is designed shows how Nicholas broke the city into parts. The buildings, walls, streets and freeways become representations of an emotional space. He worked on the series for about three years, using a 5x4 camera and shooting early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
The Process
For this book I did the production and printing. Los Angeles is a vibrant city full of colour. My job was to translate these colours and the feel of the city well, in the way that Nicolas had intended. Lots of things happen in te city and so there are many different kind of photo's keeping me on my toes in reproducing the images. To make sure I was on the right track, doing what Nicolas had in mind, we kept in touch through skype. Communication with the artist is an important part of my job and allows me to do the best I can. We ended up with a beautiful product which sold out in no time. A lot op people were interested in 738. I'm very happy with the end result.
