The Book
Are they Rocks or Clouds addresses the history of hydrogeological events in the Dolomite mountains and, more broadly, how our cultural memories of such incidents are shaped. The publication explores how human habitation persists in locations that have established patterns of landslides, floods, and other such possible catastrophes. The work comprises a blend of research and archival images, texts, and recent photographs woven together to address the themes of Destruction, Protection, Experience, and Resilience in areas with centuries-long cycles of human vulnerability in the face of natural disasters.
The Process
Are They Rocks or Clouds began for me when Marina was preparing for graduation at the Royal University of Art, The Hague. This was the project she was graduating with and I helped her getting the presentation prints right. We agreed that, should this ever become a properly printed book, we would continue this cooperation.
For this book Marina and I fine tuned the expression of the whole series in close cooperation. In doing so we took it from a very realistic expression to something just a little more unreal, even threatening perhaps.
I realised how much satisfaction it gave me to help bring this project to its final destination when Marina, Hans and I were on press printing the book. Being part of such processes feels very rewarding to me.
