The Book
Maktak and Gasoline is a book by Ellis Doeven. Ellis Doeven is married into the community of people living at Point Hope, Alaska. For 10 years she has portrayed life in that village. She was captivated by the time that had seemed to stand still there in stark contrast with her own culture where everybody is driven by the time on the clock. At the same time being a westerner brought her also a sense of guilt for the community and land has been threatened by western expansionism. Hunting whales, taking land and dumping toxic waste.
The second time Ellis returned to Point Hope she met her partner and ever since they have been traveling between Amsterdam and Point Hope. Switching between two very different lives. With this book she hopes to open your heart for the community and land.
The Process
Ellis shoots on film and provided me with the raw scans. Together we worked on creating the right atmosphere. I learned how different the light is in those Northern areas which required me to look at the use of light and how that affects the colours. Next to making the book the finalised RGB files where used to print the exhibition prints by Ellis. I converted those into the proper CMYK files for printing in UV-Offset. All in all it was a fun project to work on which presented its own challenges and taught me something new.
