The Book
Red Flower: The women of Okinawa is about a book about the young women in Koza and Kin, Okinawa after the war was over. many American soldiers were still stationed there and young women had boyfriend after boyfriend. It was very common back then that women would live with the soldier they had met in the bar. weep when he left and move on to the next. Many of these images are from the first book Ishikawa published called Hot Days in Camp Hansen. However, that book had a short lived life as the publisher was forced to trash it after a law suit decided it was not allowed to be published.
The Process
For this new edition we had to work with rather poor scans of prints of the original negatives. The only other source material I had was an rare original copy of the book that had been spared. My job here was to rework those scans to a level that would be somewhat competitive to the first publication. Since there was no big rush on this project I could take my time and make sure I could get the best results and improve gradually. This case proves that time is essentil to make absolutely outstanding work!
This book is printed in Duotones. For this we used two blacks.
